As we talk about ways to prevent prematurity, its important to look at how a normal, healthy pregnancy progresses. With elective inductions and c-sections being scheduled between 34 and 36 weeks, there are quite a few babies being born several weeks before they’re ready for the world.
So what’s happening in those last 6 weeks?
Week 34: The baby’s sleep patterns are developing.
Week 35: The baby’s eyes, ears and lungs are still forming and his/her brain is about 2/3 what it will weigh at 39 weeks.
Week 36: The baby kicks and stretches, is about 20 inches long and weighs about 6 pounds.
Week 37: The baby’s organs and systems are continuing to develop.
Week 38: The baby is feeling a little cramped in there but still isn’t quite done growing.
Week 39: That little bundle of joy is ready to make its grand entrance!
